Tonight on WKCR, Columbia University’s student-run radio station (89.9 FM), I was listening to music from Niger, where I think some people may have finally perfected the playing of the electric guitar — a nirvana heavily sought after all over the world.

Now, people who know me, know that I am a fan of Jimmy Page and Jerry Garcia. But, please lend an ear (at the following link) to: BOMBINO

(Ahoulaguine Akaline Traditional, Arranged by Goumour AlmoctarAgadez Cumbancha 2011).

This music from Niger is truly the angels’ music.

When I talk about WKCR, I usually highlight the station’s jazz, which is exceptional. But, I was moved to do this post by Bombino, a Taureg singer-songwriter and guitarist.

WKCR is doing a fund-raising drive right now. If you’re moved by the music, consider contributing. I just did…

Below is an excerpt from their fund-raising drive:

Dear WKCR Supporter,

Did you know that WKCR marked its 80th anniversary this year?

Our storied station first launched in February 1941, when the fledgling Columbia University Radio Club broadcast on AM for the first time to a few Columbia dorms. By the end of that year, what had been a “temporary” workspace was wired with equipment enabling live programs from outside the studio — and the station was here to stay. In the decades that followed, our local, student-led operation transformed into the FM destination that you know today, with an audience extending to all of New York City and the Tri-State Area.

We will be celebrating this incredible milestone over the next year, taking the opportunity to look back at our rich history as well as to curate special anniversary programs. We’ll also be honoring an iconic member of our community, the inimitable jazz master and longtime host Phil Schaap, who died in September.

Much of our success has been made possible by our listeners, whose donations are critical to the station. And we continue to need your support. Today we are kicking off a fundraising campaign through December 17. Please consider making a gift to WKCR to help us further our vibrant array of programming. We also face challenges as we gradually return to live operation and confront the realities of our aging studio. New systems and equipment are needed to optimize our programming and process for the future.

GIVE NOW here.
